Post EMC 2021 Conference Report – Key Outcomes & Industry Trends
EMC 2021 Brings the Regional Energy Industry Together to Support a Clean Energy Transition Thanks from the Organising Committee for Attending EMC 2021 Firstly on behalf of the organising committee, it is a pleasure to thank you for attending the Eastern Mediterranean 2021 in Nicosia! With a total of 1400 participants, including nearly 100 speakers and 300 delegates, EMC 2021 was the first event of its scale to bring the industry of the Eastern Mediterranean to explore the commercial and technical development of the energy basin. A packed agenda and taking place over three days and with three consecutive streams, EMC 2021 brought together the leading stakeholders from Cyprus, Greece, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel, Italy as well as the wider region to debate and assess the outlook for both upstream project development and downstream consumer markets. With VIP’s and ministerial support from Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Greece, Egypt as well as the wider industry, the inaugural EMC 2021 has helped to put the region to the fore of global energy developments and set Cyprus as a regional hub to support a clean energy transition. As one of the first events in the region of its kind, the content rich programme delivered over forty hours of continuous conference sessions and included: – 94 speakers – 88 sessions – 4 Ministerial keynotes – 15 plenary sessions – 6 panel debates – 49 technical sessions Despite Covid, EMC was a great success and we look forward to the next edition of EMC in 2023! On behalf of the committee, I would like to finally say that it was a pleasure to meet you in Nicosia last week and we look forward to tracking the inevitable success of the industry as it progresses. With Best Wishes, Nicholas Cobb Conference Manager – EMC 2021 Key Trends & Event Outcomes Held over three days and with nine streams, the conference comprised some forty plus hours of consecutive content covering everything from project development to regulation, health and safety, subsurface infrastructures as well as offshore supply chain considerations to the digitalisation of the sustainable energy sector in the Easter Mediterranean. This report will offer some of the key highlights and takeaways from the proceedings and provide a useful summary for your visit. With covid still limiting the full capacity of global events, attendees from Cyprus, the region and further afield made their way to Nicosia to address the key issues facing the industry. With delegations of representatives from the region, the event has played a major role in promoting Cyprus as an energy hub for the wider region and as such has acted as one of the first major energy industry gatherings for the sector since covid hit. There are a number of key takeaways to note, as outlined below: Strategic & Regional Key Takeaways There remains major political and industry will to drive forward projects, E&P and the development of processing infrastructure across the region – what industry is waiting for is the offshore drilling to commence, the rest is seemingly in place with strong international support Government across the region supports a clean energy transition To maintain domestic & region demand and export to European markets, regular discoveries are required to be made to support existing Zohr, Levant, Aphrodite and other recent discoveries There is key support for the outcomes of the COP26 agreement by governments of the region Agreement that the region can be a low risk partner for growing European markets, despite current difficulties with the EEZ Development of LNG infrastructure in Cyprus remains a key priority Limassol remains a key support base for the wider offshore developments CCS in Egypt is continuing to develop at pace CCS remains a strong local focus for the nations of the region There is great potential for offshore wind farms LNG is seen a sustainable and long term option for exporting gas produced in the region In terms of energy transition, all regional partners are keen to support this move by embracing a mixed renewable – natural gas mix of energy supply There is good day to day interaction between all major players in the area operating and looking to operate in the basin There remains strong local environmental awareness and initiatives – one such example is the Blue Limassol initiative LNG gloating storage and regasification units provide a ready solution to feed local markets and provide a base for excess natural gas Natural gas and power networks across the region are technically advanced, at scale and well regulated Operators are now actively encouraging and supporting a clean energy transition and championing a sustainable move to clean natural gas and renewables – as showcased by Total Energies LNG is seen as a clean maritime fuel in the region The Euroasia interconnector will provide a great platform for connecting the power networks of the region Key Technical Points to Note Technically speaking, the vast majority of subsurface infrastructures are feasible and are awaiting approval for drilling projects to start HSE remains a key consideration and Cyprus and its local partners have a well established HSE, spill contingency and Search and Rescue protocol Drilling at deep water depths in the region are feasible and preparations are ready, with knowledge gained from international frontier works Maximising oil recovery through the latest technology can help keep the frontier at optimal output Developing Early Gas Production Facilities (EPF) is a top priority for all partners in the region Transporting H2 and CO2 offshore is a current problem that can be overcome by technical partnerships There is sufficient construction and development material, expertise and knowledge to develop a local top-tier infrastructure – international expertise is required for subsurface development primarily AI and digitalisation is a top priority with AI-led machine learning a major focus for operators to boost efficiencies Holistic management of back office and tech infrastructure is the way operators are now moving Deepwater robotics will play a major role in future developments CNG is a useful
Can crude oil prices make it to the triple digits this year?
A combination of factors sent oil prices skyward over the weekend. It essentially boils down to the state of inventories, supplies being kept in check, and demand recovering from the summer’s Delta variant COVID-19 wave. Then you can factor in the global natural gas shortage. A big part of the support crude prices are getting comes from the gas crisis in the form of fuel-switching – or at least the idea of increased fuel switching. To continue reading click here
Greece pledges to link Egypt to European Union’s energy market
Greece pledged Tuesday to link Egypt to the European Union’s energy market with an undersea cable that would carry electricity across the Mediterranean. “[Egypt’s] link to Europe will be Greece,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said after talks in Athens with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. “We are seeking diversification of energy sources, and Egypt can also become a provider of electricity, which will be produced mainly by the sun.” To continue reading the yahoo article click here
EMC is part of the OMC – MOC group of events which covers the Mediterannean Energy Sector.
EMC is set to become the 3rd meeting in the mediterranean area strategically located in Cyprus which has recently emerged as one of the most interesting areas in the world energy circuit.
EMC 2020 is the essential platform for domestic and international stakeholders that invest, meet , network, share ideas and create new partnerships.
THE NEW MEDITERRANEAN ALLIANCE
The Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum was the meeting place for the energy ministries coming from Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, and Palestine held in Cairo to shape new alliances given the major gas discoveries in the East Mediterranean area making Cyprus the key meeting place to host a world class Exhibition and Conference.
